My last message had the gist of what I did. I'm in the middle of refactoring my lab, should be ready to go again soon if there is something more specific you would like to know about? The premise was that I could work with a customer who has IA Ignition running in their environment at the edge (pretty common with US manufacturers these days) and use the battle-tested UMH stack to facilitate UNS initiatives.
j
Connecting you all three again, as you all three are using or want to use Ignition together with the UMH @ricardo_maestas @Don Pancoe @Denis

Hi Jeremy. We must be on the same wavelength- revisiting this is actually on my agenda for today. My UMH lab environment was still running v0.9.14 and before I got too far into the project I wanted to get it updated to 0.13.6... working on this now.
j
ahhh perfect timing!
I just wrote down and told @Don Pancoe as well, that upgrading is currently quite tiring and only worthwhile if you have a production setup ongoing.
if you just playing around, then simply re-installing it (by executing the command from the Management Console again) could be the quickest way
if you already have some data, then you must go through the upgrade process. I've added again a point (and now with you two points) to the user story "allow easy UMH upgrading in the Management Console"
it is especially tiring if you already missed a couple of versions :/ if it is just one or two, it is usually quick to do
r
This is good advice. Guess I'm a sucker for punishment... made it up to 0.9.18 so far and haven't decided if I want to continue down this path for the learning/experience or spin up a new vm (i'm using flatcar as opposed to the management console).
j
flatcar is fine!
just add a new instance in the management console
take the command, and copy it into flatcar
will ask you to overwrite the UMH, but should work otherwise
also there is a cool video dropping tomorrow from @Denis giving a very nice and easy youtube tutorial on doing the first steps in the new UMH version and with the management console
r
to confirm- are you saying to do this involving the existing vm, or does this need a new flatcar vm?
j
no new VM 🙂
use the existing VM and SSH into it
r
Gotcha. To anybody else this is probably the best way to go... the data I have in the lab is insignificant but I may still go the tough route (just for the experience 😉 )
j
How did it go? 🙂
r
I'm hitting lots of snags lol (as expected). I was able to work through issues going from 0.9.14 to .15, .16. and .18 ([this](https://umh.docs.umh.app/docs/production-guide/upgrading/archive/0.9.15/) was helpful). I hit a snag going from 0.9.18 to 0.9.20 (timeout issue, the error is less helpful). I'm going to indulge a little more troubleshooting to gain familiarity with the process and fixing errors, but if it takes me more than another day or so I'll throw in the towel.
j
feel free to ask questions if you are stuck somewhere 🙂
r
So this is the error I see when I try doing the upgrade to 0.9.20
Copy code
Error: Command failed: /Applications/OpenLens.app/Contents/Resources/arm64/helm upgrade united-manufacturing-hub united-manufacturing-hub/united-manufacturing-hub --version 0.9.20 --values /private/var/folders/h2/jlk421js7v972h7tjljq6m2m0000gn/T/64fe4ac2a7eae108ff93b619bf26e5b3/values.yaml --namespace united-manufacturing-hub --kubeconfig /var/folders/h2/jlk421js7v972h7tjljq6m2m0000gn/T/kubeconfig-af23fcb3dd6ed19834f0e73996fad52f
Error: UPGRADE FAILED: post-upgrade hooks failed: timed out waiting for the condition
Also in Lens under Workloads -> Overview -> Events there's a handfull of imagepull errors, this is the gist of them
Copy code
Failed to pull image "ghcr.io/united-manufacturing-hub/metrics:0.9.20": rpc error: code = NotFound desc = failed to pull and unpack image "ghcr.io/united-manufacturing-hub/metrics:0.9.20": failed to resolve reference "ghcr.io/united-manufacturing-hub/metrics:0.9.20": ghcr.io/united-manufacturing-hub/metrics:0.9.20: not found
Not sure if those two are related or not. I browsed around the [metrics packages](https://github.com/united-manufacturing-hub/united-manufacturing-hub/pkgs/container/metrics/versions?filters%5Bversion_type%5D=tagged&page=3) on GitHub and didn't see one with the tag 0.9.20 (I might not be looking in the right place?). What do you think @Jermuk am I on the right track? Please don't spend too much time investigating this, at this point it's only for sport and I'll probably overwrite UMH on my VM later today anyways.
Disregard, I just overwrote the old install with 0.13.6.
j
oh sorry, I overlooked you previous message
