I think here the responses are quite good! And that is basically summarising what we experienced as well: When the data source was working int he old data source, we saw people doing maybe 1/2 small dashboards, but then asked their internal IT department or external integrators to create them, and they were using advanced features anyway and relied on SQL So we came to the conclusion that SQL is needed anyway, and it is just way faster to work with SQL for a power user than with a custom made UI. To access the data, one can still use the tag browser. Or the plug-in that @trentc built.
